Lisbon Property Tax Assistance Program
The Town of Lisbon is pleased to announce the launch of its new Property Tax Assistance Program (PTAP), created by the Lisbon Town Council to help ease the property tax burden for qualifying older residents. Established by ordinance, this program provides direct tax relief to eligible homeowners who meet specific age, residency, and state tax credit criteria.
The program is designed for residents who:
- Are 65 years of age or older as of April 1,
- Have maintained a Lisbon homestead for at least five consecutive years,
- Have received the State of Maine Property Tax Fairness Credit,
- Qualify for the State Homestead Exemption, and
- Have no property tax liens on their home.
Eligible residents must submit an application to the Town Office by April 15 each year. Applications will require verification of the applicant’s homestead, state tax credit, and exemption status. The PTAP Program Coordinator or designee will review all submissions and determine eligibility.
Approved applicants may receive a credit of up to $1,000, applied directly to their upcoming property tax bill. The final credit amount will be based on the lesser of the state credit received, the amount of the applicant’s tax bill, or available funds in the Town’s dedicated Property Tax Assistance Program Fund. If total program requests exceed available funds, credits will be prorated.
Tax credits for qualified applicants will be applied no later than August 31 of the application year.
“This program reflects Lisbon’s commitment to supporting our older residents who have contributed so much to our community,” said Council Chair, Chris Camire. “We encourage eligible homeowners to apply and take advantage of this opportunity for tax relief.”
Application forms and additional information are available at the Town Office. Applications will also be available at the Lisbon Library and the MTM Center.
